Applying false eyelashes

Long eyelashes can make your eyes look bigger, fuller and more inviting. However not all of us have been blessed with long thick lashes by nature. If not, then you can try one of the many false eyelashes on the market. If you go for natural false eyelashes and learn how to apply them correctly, no one can ever guess that they are not yours. Most celebrities rely on false lashes for red carpet events to achieve expressive eyes.

However mastering the art of applying these little goodies, takes a bit of practice not to mention plenty of patience! To avoid stressing out on the night of a big event – practice beforehand until you get the hang of it.

False eyelashes come in various styles, colors and sizes so it is up to you to choose to go subtle or va-va-voom. A few of my favorite lash brands are Shu Uemura, MAC, Laura Mercier and Ardell Fashion Lashes. The latter is less expensive, but almost the same in quality.

When it comes to the adhesive, it is worth getting a good one. The ones that are often included in the package I find are seldom up for the job. Instead I prefer to use either Shu Uemura Lash adhesive or Ardell Duo Lash Adhesive.

STEP-BY-STEP application

  1. Take the lashes out of the box, measure them to your eyes and use nail scissors to trim off a few lashes on the longer end if they are too long (generally they tend to be much longer then an average lash line).
  2. Do not put the lashes back in the box, it usually contains soft glue which might make it hard for you to pick them up later, instead lay the lashes on a piece of paper. For the application use a magnifying mirror if you have one, it will make it easier for you to see what you are doing.
  3. Put a dab of adhesive on the top of your hand, hold the fake lashes with tweezers and use the rounded/blunt end of a clean bobby pin and dip it in the adhesive and line the band of the fake lashes.
  4. Make sure you apply the glue to the entire length of the fake lash and add a bit extra on both ends of the lashes for extra hold.
  5. Give the glue 10-15 seconds to get a little bit sticky then place the lashes as close to the baseline of your own lashes as you can. Press gently with either your fingertips or a rounded object e.g. a bobby pin (be very careful you do not slip) downwards toward your own lashes. Paying extra attention to the inner and outer corners.
  6. Hold in place for about 10-15 seconds until the glue has had a chance to stick.
  7. Let the glue dry completely before applying dark camouflage eyeliner over the band of the fake eyelashes. Make sure to blend edges.
  8. For best results, use an eyelash curler to bend your natural and fake lashes together before applying mascara. (However if you intend to use the eyelashes more then once, you should not use mascara on them – see below for maintenance).

If you wish to achieve a more natural look, instead of using full sets of fake lashes use half ones, block inserts or single lashes on the mid to outer area of your eyes. This will really open up your eyes and make your lashes look fuller and longer yet still natural.

If you have bought a good/expensive pair of false eyelashes it is well worth looking after them so that you can maximize their life. Follow these simple steps.

  1. Carefully remove the lashes from your eye by starting at one corner and slowly moving to the other.
  2. Remove any excess adhesive from the band of the false eyelash.
  3. Place back onto the original casing.
  4. Do not apply mascara to the false eyelash; instead apply mascara to your own lash before putting the false style on.
